2016 Knits

As I did last year, I always like to look back at the year and see what I crafted.

This year’s official tally includes:

  • 25 hats (baby and adult included)
  • 10 pairs of socks (mostly adult, but a few for Roxy)
  • 5 baby/kid sweaters
  • 6 shawls
  • 4 cowls
  • 4 toys
  • 2 pairs of slippers
  • 3 pairs of mittens
  • 4 washcloths
  • 5 adult sweaters
  • 2 blankets
  • 1 scarf
  • 10 mug cozies

Many, but not all, of the items are pictured above. I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings!

Snug as a Mug

I’m excited to announce that I published my second pattern on Ravelry today!

Snug as a Mug is a mug sock that keeps your tumbler cozy and warm. I was inspired when I saw fellow knitters take a Starbucks Stainless Steel Create Your Own Tumbler and their favorite fingering weight yarn (stripes and speckles galore) and create their own unique mugs. Since I love all things at the intersection of knitting and tea, this was a must!

Snug as a Mug calls for 15-20 grams of fingering weight yarn – perhaps some sock leftovers or a bit of that precious skein you’ve been hoarding?

Snug as a Mug is available on Ravelry for $1.99.

The Starbucks tumblers I used appear to be out of stock right now, but were purchased through the Starbucks store online. I’ve already ordered a few other models to try and will post updates as soon as I test them!

Or, if you’d prefer to skip the knitting and treat yourself, there are a few available now in my Etsy shop.

Enjoy!

Drink Me: Capital Teas, Christmas Cookie

Another tea I added to my last order from Capital Teas was Christmas Cookie.

From the website, Christmas Cookie contains organic crystallized ginger (organic cane sugar, organic ginger), organic cinnamon, organic apple pieces, organic ginger, organic star anise, organic licorice root and organic barley malt.

It comes in a variety of sizes: 2oz for $8.95, 40z for $17.90, 8oz for $34.01, 1lb for $64.44 and 2lbs for $121.72.

When I got this one and opened the bag I was so excited because it smelled sweet and spicy. The resulting tea was good, but it lacked the spicy punch I had hoped for. I will try brewing it again stronger. It was, however, a really nice afternoon herbal tea and I enjoyed it with some lemon holiday cookies from a friend.

Drink Me: Capital Teas, Figgy Pudding

Recently I placed an order with Capital Teas for some holiday treats. One of the teas I wanted to try was Figgy Pudding.

Figgy Pudding is a black tea with figs and Acerola cherries.

It is available in a variety of sizes: 2oz for $9.95, 4oz for $19.90, 8oz for $37.81, 1lb for $71.64 and 2lb for $135.32.

When I opened the package I smelled the deep rich aroma of the figs and cherries, which definitely reminded me of warm holiday treats.  Upon tasting this one, I was a little disappointed in that I only really got the cherry flavor. It was a good strong black tea, and the fruit flavor was nice, but I think I wanted a bit more fig flavor and it seemed to be overridden by cherry. That said, it should be a good tea for these cold holiday nights!

A Very Buffalo Christmas.

As some of you know, I didn’t grow up celebrating Christmas.  However, when I married my husband I was adopted into his family’s Christmas customs.

Since I don’t have a collection of Christmas ornaments for our tree, I decided that I would build our collection with intent, making each ornament special.  Every year I buy an ornament that corresponds to our wedding anniversary. For the 7th anniversary (last year), the Hallmark traditional gift is iron. I perused Amazon and Etsy and I found a wrought iron buffalo ornament that I liked; we had just been on a long vacation to Yellowstone and seen tons of buffalo. So I ordered it.

Imagine my surprise when it arrived and it wasn’t a tree ornament, but over a foot wide, and at least 8” tall.

My husband suggested I knit our buffalo a Christmas sweater. This is the result.

When knitting a sweater for a buffalo, short rows for the hump are a must.

Knittea: DIY Mug

Last Saturday I was idly browsing my Instagram feed and I came upon a friend’s photo of a DIY mug that she had added knitting to:

She noted she had gotten the idea from a friend, so I went and checked out her friend’s feed and sure enough, it was a great idea!

The only problem I see is that I didn't make this sooner. Genius! #spunrightround #starbuckstumbler

I immediately Googled that and found the Starbucks Stainless Steel Create Your Own Tumbler for $18.99 here.
