TDF 2017 – Part 1

Every year I take part in the Tour de Fleece.  Basically I spend 3 weeks spinning (almost exclusively) while watching the Tour de France. It has come to be a summer ritual that I love and look forward to each year.

The tour kicked off on July 1, and despite having a house full of company I dug right in.

My first spin was a braid of Hello Yarn Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) in the colorway New Summer. This was a club color way and I loved the southwestern colors.

I finished this spin on July 3, and ended up with 268 yards of a roughly sport weight yarn.

Next I selected a braid of Wooly Wonka Fibers.  This one is Superwash Merino in reds and oranges and greys.  I just loved the contrast in this braid, and the fiber was beautiful to spin.

I finished this braid on July 7, and ended up with 343 yards of heavy fingering/sport weight yarn.

My third spin is another braid of Hello Yarn fiber, in the colorway Mean Streak.  This braid was a new spinning blend for me: 65% Polwarth merino, 25% Mohair and 10% Tussah silk.  I have to say that I didn’t care for spinning the fiber, even though I love the finished yarn. I found the Mohair to be kind of sticky and it shed everywhere. The finished yarn just glows though!

I ended this spin with 404 yards of fingering weight yarn. I think this skein would make wonderful socks!

At this point we’re about halfway through the tour. I’m hoping to get another 2-3 braids spun up before the end on July 23.

All of these spins are currently available for purchase in my shop!
