TDF 2017: The second half.

When I last left off on my Tour de Fleece post, I had finished 3 spins. I was able to complete 2 more before my tour ended.

Next up on the wheel was a set of batts that I had carded together out of a Spectrum Kit from Art Club in blues.

This was a full 8 oz of fiber (Merino, Romney and Corriedale) and I ended up with 668 yards of a sport to light DK weight yarn.  Its probably a medium softness, but I think it would make a great shawl or a sweater yoke.

My final spin for the tour was another braid from Hello Yarn, Falkland wool in the Like Berries on a Bush colorway. This colorway was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of spinning it.

I ended up with 399 yards in this 4.1 oz skein.  I think this one would be perfect for socks.

Overall I ended the tour spinning 24.5 oz of fiber and over 2000 yards. This isn’t quite as much as in previous years, but I’m still pleased with what I got done.

In a bit of post-Tour news, I got a bit of a boost yesterday when Ravelry published their Tour de Fleece round up and a skein of my yarn was featured in the article!

TDF 2017 – Part 1

Every year I take part in the Tour de Fleece.  Basically I spend 3 weeks spinning (almost exclusively) while watching the Tour de France. It has come to be a summer ritual that I love and look forward to each year.

The tour kicked off on July 1, and despite having a house full of company I dug right in.

My first spin was a braid of Hello Yarn Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) in the colorway New Summer. This was a club color way and I loved the southwestern colors.

I finished this spin on July 3, and ended up with 268 yards of a roughly sport weight yarn.

Next I selected a braid of Wooly Wonka Fibers.  This one is Superwash Merino in reds and oranges and greys.  I just loved the contrast in this braid, and the fiber was beautiful to spin.

I finished this braid on July 7, and ended up with 343 yards of heavy fingering/sport weight yarn.

My third spin is another braid of Hello Yarn fiber, in the colorway Mean Streak.  This braid was a new spinning blend for me: 65% Polwarth merino, 25% Mohair and 10% Tussah silk.  I have to say that I didn’t care for spinning the fiber, even though I love the finished yarn. I found the Mohair to be kind of sticky and it shed everywhere. The finished yarn just glows though!

I ended this spin with 404 yards of fingering weight yarn. I think this skein would make wonderful socks!

At this point we’re about halfway through the tour. I’m hoping to get another 2-3 braids spun up before the end on July 23.

All of these spins are currently available for purchase in my shop!

TDF 2016 – the final wrapup

When I last left off I had just finished the singles for Velvet Waistcoat from Owl About Yarn.  The final measurements were 3.4oz and 306yds and this one is available in the shop.

Next up on the wheel I decided to spin the black Shetland from the sampler pack.

I ended up with 2.2 oz and 165 yds.

My final spin for the tour was a braid of Polwarth from Hello Yarn called Millennium Hand and Shrimp. It was actually a prize that I won from TDF 2015, so it felt great to get it on the wheel.

When all was said and done, this one came out to 4.1oz and 397yds.

And that was a wrap on my tour. I put together a collage of all my spins and a few stats for you:

TDF 2016 came in at 27.9 oz and 2,507 yds.

TDF 2016: Week 2 Recap

I left off last week on my plying adventure.  On day 8, I plied the Wooly Wonka Fibers and the Fat Cat Knits.

Bazinga! came out to 4.2 oz and 327 yds and is available in my shop.

The Smoke was 2 oz and came out to 143 yds.

Next up on the wheel, on day 9, was a Southern Cross Fibre braid in Falkland/Alpaca/Silk called Cavern – this was a luscious braid to spin and spun very thin.

On day 10, I started on some Moorit Shetland from the sampler pack.

Day 11 was for plying and finishing the skein of Cavern.

Cavern came out to be 3.6 oz and 402 yards. This one is also in my shop.

Wednesday, day 12, I broke my own rule about rest days and plied the Moorit. It came out to 2.2 oz and 160 yards overall.

Thursday I started on a new braid. This one is from Owl About Yarn and is a Polwarth/Merino blend in the Velvet Waistcoat colorway.

Friday was finishing the Velvet Waistcoat singles, and Saturday was for plying!

Another week done and another 9.2 oz spun this week bringing my total to 21.6 oz or well over a pound. I’m still hoping to get 1-2 more naturals spun and maybe eke out 1-2 more dyed braids. Onward!

TDF 2016: Week 1 Recap

As of today we are a week into the Tour de France and my favorite Tour de Fleece.  I’ve more or less been keeping up with watching the stages, and I’ve definitely been keeping up with my spinning this week.

The tour kicked off on July 2, and I was excited for a full day of spinning at home. I managed to spin more than 2 ounces of my first braid, a delightful Hello Yarn Rambouillet in Shy Creature.

Day 2 of the tour, July 3, was more Shy Creature as well as some cream Shetland for my Hap Shawl.

Day 3 was the July 4th holiday, but I still managed to take in the stage and get my first two spins plied. That means 6oz spun in the first three days!

After a bath, the Shy Creature came out to 435 yards of squishy, poofy yarn. This one is available in my shop!

After its bath, the cream Shetland came out to 177 yards.

With those spins finished, on day 4 I turned to Wooly Wonka Fibers Superwash Merino in the colorway Bazinga!

Wednesday, July 6 was a “rest day” for me as I went to knit night and didn’t get to sit at my wheel. I normally follow this pattern during the TDF and I’ll spin the official tour rest days to make up for it. Instead I worked on a baby blanket for my new nephew.

Thursday, July 7, I caught up on stage 5 of the tour, and finished the Bazinga! along with sampling 2 oz of fiber from Fat Cat Knits. The fiber is a Corriedale cross in the Smoke Colorway. I’m auditioning a few colors for the main body of my hap shawl and I think Smoke might be the winner.

Friday, July 8 I was able to ply the next two spins, the Bazinga! and the Smoke.

Overall, I’m pleased with my first week of spinning since I was able to spin more than 12 oz of fiber and get a good start on my TDF projects.
