A few months ago, Stitchcraft Marketing contacted me to see if I would be interested in trying some beautiful organic cotton yarn from Appalachian Baby Design. The company is located in West Virginia, in the Appalachians, and in creating children’s designs out of organic yarns from small-scale U.S. sustainable family-owned cotton farms, sheep ranches and family-owned mills.
Appalachian Baby Designs was generous enough to offer me a three skein set of sport weight cotton yarns in a few different color combinations. I selected the one that included Blush, Silver and Natural. The yarns arrived attractively packages in a gauzy bag.
The sport weight yarn comes in 84g skeins that are 194 yards each, so this delightful package had almost 600 yards of yarn to work with. I went looking for a summery pattern and quickly narrowed in on something for my niece Roxy. I settled on a cute summer dress pattern, Zippy by Valerie Morris.
I started knitting and right away I liked what I saw. It reminded me of ice cream!
I have to say that I really enjoyed working with the yarn. Cotton yarns can run the gamut from super soft to rough, and this one was delightfully soft. It was a little splitty, but that does happen with cotton yarns quite often. Cotton can also be hard on the hands to work with because there isn’t as much give in the yarn as there is with wool. I experienced that a little with this project, but not as much as I have with other cottons in the past. And when I was finished, I popped this cute dress in the washer and dryer (yay easy care!) and it came out even softer than when it went in. I’m hoping my niece loves it, and I would definitely use Appalachian Baby Design yarns in future projects (it also comes in a chunky weight).
Appalachian Baby Design also sent me a second set of the three yarns to giveaway! Head on over to my Instagram account for more details on how to enter to win.
A special thank you to Stitchcraft Marketing and the folks at Appalachian Baby Design who sent me 3 skeins of Appalachian Baby Organic Cotton Sport (retail: $35.00) for free. I received no other compensation for this review. All opinions and photos are my own.
